Every snowboarder knows top-notch bindings are a crucial component of enjoying your ride down the mountain, but not every boarder knows just how simple it can be to install your own bindings. Keep in mind that properly attached bindings are also a necessary component of staying safe on the slopes, so if you’re hesitant to give installing your own bindings a go, there’s no shame in bringing your board and bindings into a shop and leaving it to the pros. If you just freed your shiny new bindings from their packaging and feel comfortable installing them yourself, follow our step-by-step guide on how to install snowboard bindings!
The hardware that came with the board, a #3 Philips screwdriver for the mounting screws, and a #2 Philips screwdriver to adjust the ankle straps and high back.
Step 1 – Determine if you are regular or goofy
(Left foot forward = Regular / Right foot forward = Goofy)
To determine which is your dominant foot, lean forward or have someone gently push you from behind. Whatever foot you put out to brace yourself is typically your lead or front foot. Another popular way of determining which of your feet is dominant, or front foot, is to imagine you are going to slide across a patch of ice. Whichever foot you lead with is your dominant foot.
Step 2 – Stance width
This is the width between your feet. A wider stance will give you a more stable ride, while a narrower stance will be quicker edge to edge. Most boards will have a reference stance or neutral stance; this is a good place to start.
Step 3 – Stance placement
Depending on the type of board you have and your riding style, you will be positioned either center or set back. A center stance is ideal for freestyle riding, while a set back stance gives you a longer nose and shorter tail; this is better for directional riding or free riding on powder days.
Step 4 – Angle bindings
Start with your feet slightly turned out or duck footed, your front foot pointed towards the nose and back foot towards the tail. A good place to start is positive 15 degrees in the front and negative 6 degrees in the back, once you get comfortable you can play around with your angles to find your personal preference. First remove the foam foot bed from the top of the binding to expose the disc, skip this step if you have EST bindings. Align the indicator with the desired angel (notches are in intervals of 3 degrees) then place the binding with the disc on the board over the reference or center of the inserts/channel.
Step 5 – Mount bindings
Start with your lead or front binding, and remember the ratchets on your binding straps should always be on the outside.
Disk – Once in preffered place and at desired angle, make sure the screw insert pattern on the disc is running across the width of the board. Turn the first screw in loosely, followed by the other three. Place your boot in the binding to make sure your boot is centered on the board and you have an even amount of toe and heal hang. Adjust binding towards the toe or heal edge if necessary. Snug up all the screws in a star or cross pattern using a #3 Phillips screw driver (do not over tighten) and replace the foam foot bed.
EST – First, pop out the rubber plug from the channel with a screwdriver, slide in the inserts that came with the board into the channel and reinsert the rubber plug. Place binding over channel and drop the two screws into the channel inserts on either side of the binding. Move to desired stance and angle by looking through the indicator window. Place your boot in the binding to make sure your boot is centered on the board and you have an even amount of toe and heal hang. Adjust binding towards the toe or heal edge if necessary. Tighten both screws without over tightening.
Repeat this process for the back binding.
Step 6 – Adjust high backs
Adjust your high backs by loosening the screws on either side (usually with a #2 screwdriver) and twisting until the high back is parallel to the heal edge of your board. This will give you more control of the board. You can also play around with forward lean, by tilting your high backs further.
Step 7 – Adjust straps
Finally place your boot in the binding, make sure the ankle and toe straps are centered on the boot. To adjust the strap, either loosen the screw or flip the lever then move the strap to the desired position.
Step 8 – You are ready to ride!
As you progress as a rider you will most likely play around with your settings to dial in your stance and find that sweet spot!
Check to make sure all the screws are tight and step into the bindings to check the comfort of the stance.
