Since day one, our passion has been helping you #StepOutside and enjoy all that mother earth has to offer. Everything we do, including our favorite outdoor activities, has a substantial impact on the environment. Undeniably, we as a community need to work together to influence change to help protect our most treasured playground. Christy Sports is proud to partner with brands working towards protecting our environment, and we’re honored to share their hard work with you.
Most people have no idea where their clothes or gear are coming from, let alone the impact it has on the environment. The manufacturing process for any product-based business is up against challenges regarding their direct impact on the environment. Thankfully, some companies are pushing for change and taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint, but it doesn’t come without cost. As outdoor enthusiasts, we have an opportunity to use our voices and start paying attention to where we are spending our money. By supporting companies with sustainable practices, we create a bigger demand for sustainably focused products and, in turn, invest in the evolution of responsible production processes to preserve our planet and all our favorite outdoor activities.
Leaders in Sustainable Materials
The companies below are pioneers in their field by using materials and processes that reduce the impact they have on the environment. When shopping for sustainable apparel, look for 3rd party certifications such as: Oeko-Tex, GOTS, Bluesign®, ROC, Fair Trade Certified, and B Corp.
Jones
Jones snowboards, splitboards, and outerwear are made with recycled materials in a factory that runs on 100% solar power. All the fabrics they use in their outerwear are Oeko-Tex, GOTS, and/or Bluesign® certified. Their responsibly sourced materials guarantee that their products are free from harmful chemicals and are safe to both work with and wear.

Picture only uses GOTS-certified organic cotton, GRS recycled polyester, Bio-Sourced polyester, Tencel™, and pure stainless steel. They use PFC-free water-repellent treatment for all their technical products, providing water-proof properties to technical fabrics without the health concerns for humans and animals. They also use a dyeing solution made from organic cotton, which helps reduce water and energy consumption by 50% compared to conventional methods.
Quiksilver
Quiksilver is inspired to do better and is continuously working towards designing products with natural materials sourced from regenerative agriculture. 100% of their boardshorts and 93% of their mountain wear are made with recycled materials. They recently launched a Made Better shop which has a variety of apparel made with 100% organic cotton, recycled materials, and natural dyes.
Patagonia
Patagonia has built robust environmental and animal welfare responsibility programs to guide how they make their materials and products. Their apparel uses a range of Regenerative Certified Organic cotton, recycled wool, recycled polyester, recycled cashmere, Yulex natural rubber, Tencel™, hemp, PFC-free Durable Water Repellent and more.
Spyder
Spyder recognizes that no one can solve the climate crisis alone, so they’ve partnered with sustainable manufacturers to create their line of outdoor apparel. Their apparel uses GORE-TEX™ which is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition using PFC-free Durable Water Repellent. They use PrimaLoft®, which provides biodegradable and 100% recycled synthetic insulation, as well as P.U.R.E. manufacturing technology which relies on air instead of heat from an oven to produce insulation. Partnering with these manufacturers drastically reduces their carbon emission.
Leaders in Warranty Practices
One of the more impactful things we can do to reduce carbon emissions is to keep clothing out of landfills, which means buying less, repairing more, and trading in gear when you no longer need it. These brands have a stellar lifetime repair policy, plus a previously owned shop where you can trade in or buy used gear.
Picture
Picture works with repair centers to ensure lifetime repairability on all technical jackets and pants as well as mid-layers, tech sweaters, and backpacks. They will help repair rips, tears, and other damages to increase the product’s longevity to diminish the overall impact on the environment.
Patagonia
Patagonia believes in repairing damaged gear before buying something new. If you have any type of damage to your apparel, bring it into a store near you to be professionally repaired or follow one of their detailed DIY repair tutorials. Patagonia also has a versatile Worn Wear shop where you can trade in your old gear and/or buy used gear at a reduced price.
Companies with Sustainable Factories
The energy sources that are used globally are finite, and the urgency with which carbon emissions must be reduced grows by the day. Using renewable energy sources, especially in manufacturing, is critical to slowing down the harmful impacts of climate change.
Rossignol
Starting in January 2023, all of Rossignol’s production sites, including their head office in Saint-Jean-de-Moirans and their logistics platform in Saint-Etienne-de-Saint-Geoirs will operate 100% with renewable energy. They also plan to make their Sallanches factory the first fully recyclable ski factory, along with an expert repair center to extend the lifespan of their products.
Capita
CAPiTA Snowboards are hand-crafted in Austria with 100% clean energy at their own manufacturing facility named The Mothership. They generate power via an on-site hydro-activated NH3 Therman Energy System in concert with their array of solar panels. The Mothership is also dedicated to finding new ways to produce responsibly and find safer, more sustainable, and recyclable materials to use in construction.
Lib Tech
Every Lib Tech board is produced in their environmentally friendly factory and coined with the name Mervin Made. Mervin uses better manufacturing practices that both protect the health of their employees and the planet, leaving zero hazardous waste behind in production. Mervin's Eco Process printing is one of the things that sets them apart from every other board factory. They only use eco materials like non-petroleum-based bioplastics, soy-based elastomer sidewalls, low VOC epoxy, additive-free basalt fibers, and FSC "pure" certified wood cores.
How is our rental gear helping?
Purchasing skis, snowboards, and mountain biking gear is quite an investment. So, if you go skiing or riding only a handful of times or travel far distances to get to the mountains, we highly encourage renting your gear. This prevents products from getting stored in closets and avoids unnecessary wasteful manufacturing processes.
