Winter Adventures in the Mountain West: Best Spots for Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

While the Mountain West is famous for its downhill thrills, there’s another side to winter waiting to be explored. If you love the quiet glide of cross-country skis or the peaceful crunch of snowshoes, you’re in for a treat. From Colorado’s sun-dappled meadows to Montana’s towering snow-capped peaks, we’ve rounded up the best spots to embrace winter’s magic. So, grab your gear, take a deep breath of that crisp mountain air, and let’s get started. Here are a few of our favorite places to explore on our cross-country skis and snowshoes.

Denver/Boulder/Front Range:

Ruby Hill Park, Denver: This urban park transforms into a winter playground with a small loop ideal for beginners. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle hills, perfect for practicing balance and technique. When snow conditions are right, this park becomes a delightful spot for a quick ski session right in the city.

The 71-mile Highline Canal Trail, one of the longest urban trails in the U.S., winds through Denver’s landscape, offering flat terrain ideal for cross-country skiing when snow conditions allow. Latecomers often find a pre-packed trail, making it even easier to enjoy. With numerous entry points, you can tailor your trek to any length. Beloved by locals, this National Landmark Trail connects communities from Waterton Canyon to Green Valley Ranch, welcoming hikers, cyclists, equestrians, and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Eldora Nordic Center: With nearly 25 miles of trails for classic skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing, the Eldora Nordic Center is a snow lover’s paradise. Whether you’re hitting the snow for the first time with a pro instructor, joining a training group, or just enjoying the mountain air with friends, Eldora offers a cross-country program for skiers of all levels.

Colorado Rocky Mountains:

Aspen Snowmass Nordic Council Trails: Ski through snow globe-like landscapes on over 90 km of free trails. The “Government Trail” connects Aspen to Snowmass with intermediate sections for longer adventures. If you’re looking for something dog-friendly, check out “Labrador Lane” in Snowmass. Ashcroft Ski Touring outside Aspen offers an independent Nordic experience in a stunning alpine setting (Reservations required).

Breckenridge Nordic Center: With 18+ miles of trails, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure winter wonderland. There's something for everyone, from the “Upper Flats” to the challenging “Moonstone” with climbs and descents. The “Peak to Peak” trail offers stunning panoramic views, and all trails are groomed to perfection for both classic and skate skiing—like a snowy runway waiting for you.

Crested Butte Nordic Center: Known as The “Nordic Capital,” the Crested Butte Nordic Center boasts over 50 km of stunning trails for all levels. Beginners can enjoy the scenic “Lupine,” while intermediates tackle the rolling “Lower Loop.” Advanced skiers can challenge themselves on “Magic Meadows.” Meticulously groomed, the trails wind through beautiful aspen groves.

Devil's Thumb Ranch, Tabernash: This place offers more than skiing—it’s a winter escape with luxury. With nearly 120 km of trails, from beginner-friendly “Moon Hill” to expert “Hottentot,” there’s something for everyone. Enjoy scenic views of “Wildflower” or bring your dog to the dedicated trail. Plus, unwind in style with post-ski amenities. Regularly voted as one of the best trails in North America, it is open to both lodging and non-lodging guests.

Frisco Nordic Center: Features like the Chickadee Loop offer a gentle introduction with a 1.5 km, mostly flat loop with slight inclines. The Frisco Nordic Center also has more challenging trails for those ready to step up, including the 5 km "Meadow Loop," which winds through scenic landscapes.

Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center: With 75 miles of trails, Snow Mountain Ranch is an endless adventure for all levels. From the flat “Snow Mountain Loop” for beginners to the challenging “Sundance” for experts, there’s something for everyone. Plus, snowshoeing paths are available for extra fun.

Washington:

Methow Trails, Methow Valley: With over 120 miles (200 km) of perfectly groomed trails, this is the Disneyland of Nordic skiing. Whether you’re after gentle valley trails with kid-friendly loops, long-distance routes connecting towns and lodges, or challenging climbs for seasoned athletes, there’s something for everyone.
